Learning Disability Week 2021 celebrates art and creativity

14th June 2021

This year’s Learning Disability Week, 14 June to 20 June, is celebrating art and creativity. For many of us, getting creative has been a way to stay connected and positive through the challenges of the last year.

So this week we are shining a spotlight on some of the amazing achievements of the people we support at FitzRoy. Take a look at some of our top stories from the past year and find out how you can get involved with Learning Disability Week 2021.

James Sets Up His Own Photography Blog

James is a member of our Norfolk day service The Maltings, and photography is his biggest passion. James wanted to share his work online and he has now set up his first photography blog.

“When I created my blog I wanted to show everyone at The Maltings straight away, they say they like the pictures I take and they are proud of me.”

Support worker Sara has been supporting James with his blog. She said: “James has been really excited to share his work on his blog, and he’s loved having something to focus on. I showed James how to use hashtags to help him build up his following. It’s so nice to see him happy and focused on something that he enjoys and I’m really proud of him.”

Peter publishes his second book

Peter, who is a member of our friendship and dating project Love4Life, celebrated the publication of his second book in January of this year – which he wrote and illustrated.

Our friendship and dating project Love4Life is centred around making sure adults with learning disabilities and autism have the same opportunities to make friends, have fun and maybe even find love.

Peter said: “I joined Love4Life in January 2020, and it has been brilliant – I have made new friends and have really enjoyed the events. Love4Life has definitely helped my creativity, I would love to be an actor one day, that is my next step.”
