Hair Today – Gone Tomorrow!

Sam bravely raises funds for The Maltings’ multi-sensory equipment.

Sam Sadler, a support worker at The Maltings, boldly went where few men have gone before and underwent a full body wax, in aid of the day service’s multi-sensory equipment.

Sam undertook the body wax fundraiser following comments from the people he supports on how hairy he was.

The Maltings already uses atmospheric sensory apparatus such as projectors and bubble tubes, to create a relaxing, calming and enjoyable environment. Sam hopes the money raised can be spent on more interactive sensory equipment for those with more complex needs.

Sam is extremely passionate about the cause and said:

I love my job and find it very rewarding to bring a smile to the faces of the people we support, plus I wanted to challenge myself. I was incredibly nervous about the wax and was worried that I wouldn’t be able to go through with it, but the guys we support really got behind it and cheered me on. The best part of the experience was knowing that I had their support. Seeing the final result made me feel proud. My chest hair is already starting to grow back though and it’s pretty itchy.”

The Maltings made a day of the event and hosted a barbecue for attendees who came and spectated in between their sessions.

Kerensa Palmer, Residential Manager at The Maltings, said:

I was a little shocked when Sam came up with the idea, but he was really determined to raise money for the sensory equipment. He did very well and we’re all very proud of him.”

Sam is planning to purchase rope lights, black-out blinds and a massage chair for the service’s sensory room. This equipment will help stimulate, engage and entertain the people the team supports, whilst encouraging movement and developing their sensory processing skills.

Sam’s fearless fundraising effort has so far raised over £500 in sponsorship. If you’d like to make a donation to The Maltings’ sensory fund, please visit Sam’s Just Giving page at:
