Tell you why – we do love Mondays!
17th January 2018
Our FitzRoy Day Service in Trafford, once quiet on a Monday evening, now rings with the sounds of fun and laughter. We caught up with staff, Chris and Sharon, to find out what is going on.
We are on a mission to help the people we support make their own decisions and choose the life they live. To do this we run lots of sessions for people who want to learn new skills, and take new challenges, but the one thing we’d never done was run a social club. Recently we took the plunge and launched our Monday evening social club.
It started slowly but has gathered pace, and is now a much-anticipated night out for many people with disabilities. Every Monday evening members from all over, including other day services, join us. They plan the events and create the themes. These include games nights, bingo, karaoke, discos, meals out, and drinks in the pub. In October, we had a trip to Blackpool to see the Illuminations.
The reality is some people don’t have the opportunity to go out and meet new people. For them, this social club means everything, they get to make new friends and have fun in a safe environment. Some of them don’t have funding for other services, and the club is their only time out.
Lynn, a member, said:
I love the whole thing, bingo, craft, dancing, karaoke, going out for meals, and meeting new people, plus it gets me out of my house.
