Job Description

A unique opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and experienced Head of Business Development to join our Development team in this newly created role to oversee the competitive tendering/bidding and sales processes on behalf of the organisation.

We are looking for a confident Head of Business Development who will lead, coach and help build a strong team of sales individuals to drive growth, while exceeding performance targets and continually improve performance across the development department. Leading the bid and sales team, the Head of Business Development would be responsible for:

  • Leading storyboard sessions with BD Managers and key stakeholders
  • Proactively developing relationships with subject matter experts
  • Leading the BD Managers in developing a proposal structure
  • Identifying and re-working existing pre-written and visual content where relevant, evaluating all bid narrative
  • Delivering completed written proposal responses against agreed deadlines, escalating issues as required to the Director of Operations
  • Re-writing / editing bid and proposal responses from a variety of stakeholders, typically involving contributions from finance, marketing, technical teams, as required
  • The coaching Business Development Managers and subject matter experts in writing best practice
  • Collaboration with the Business Development team to maintain the content library, ensuring the latest material is accessible for potential re-use
  • Strong time management / prioritisation skills
  • Strong written English language skills
  • Line managing a team of Business Development managers; setting objectives and helping them develop their skills as part of their personal development plans
  • Leading and motivating multi-functional bid teams in dispersed or complex environments
  • Generating a positive and enthusiastic atmosphere where people can share feedback and opinions candidly and constructively.
  • Seeking regularly feedback from across the company to improve your own performance and working practices as well as that of your team

The ideal candidate is commercial results-driven, ambitious, with a strong track record of delivering plans and projects. They would also be an excellent leader with strong collaboration skills, who will bring new ideas and energy, and be able to find ways to create new opportunities and innovative solutions.

Experience required

  • Considerable bid writing experience ideally within the Public and 3rd Sectors
  • Demonstrable consistent track record of contributing high quality written content to successful bid opportunities
  • Considerable collaboration with multidisciplinary teams
  • Highly developed organisation and time management skills
  • Understanding of our competitive marketplace
  • Solid understanding of internal governance procedures
  • Ensures timely delivery of compliant and commercially sound bid content
